Some tournaments are aimed at people in a specific time zone. You could try looking for one with 'on' hours in the US evening and 'off' hours (freezing everyone's clocks) while you sleep, next time.

Some tournaments are also quite badly set up, with inexperienced organisers massively underestimating the time needed for 4 players in different time zones to finish a game, so that some players go over time in almost every game, and tournament success becomes a bit of a lottery of whose opponents will be patient and whose will not. Before joining next time, look at the time allowed per person. Divide this by the likely number of moves per player to complete a game, and add in lots of time for sleep, work and other RL requirements. If the timing seems way too optimistic, don't join.
