Yeah the "beta" tag is not there alongside solo, family etc.

Can this be included in the filter on the new game list? I used to always check there first for the new beta games, now there is no easy way to do so.

I believe it's to split ('detach') the ships in a stack. In other words: if you do not detach, then the opponent sees a single stack of unknown ships.
