Penalties for going over time on Dominion

Penalties for going over time when playing Dominion doesn't make any sense what so ever. I just played a game where I literally clicked as fast as I could to play each card. The game wouldn't let me click any faster! The thing is, I had maybe 6 Laboratories and 6 Market and I played them every turn....
