Hi, I think that the possibility to put ship near among them is just a way to make the game longer and at the end is just a random choise...
u dont realy have benefits from get other ship before.
I personally advise to remove this possibility

or u can use one 'nuclear' if u give up an entire undamaged ship and u just destroy one enemy ship
