In games with more than two players, I believe that each additional player counts as an additional half a win for the purposes of win percentage. So, beating two opponents is worth 1.5 wins.

I cannot see anything that tells me what the Alternative Map setting does.

I am not referring to the Map Pack option, but the Alternative Map option.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The OP specified English Variant -- this means there is no option to play unneeded tiles. You either play exactly what you need to win, or none at all. If you are the defender, and already winning, playing 1 or more tiles is not a legal move, and there should be no need for the game to wait for you ...
