There are three things that change the deck size from one round to the next: (1) If a round ends because a duplicate hazard card is turned up (as opposed to all players leaving voluntarily), then a hazard card of that type is removed from the deck. (2) Any artifact card that was turned up is removed...

I agree that the stars are hard to see. Although this isn’t a bug as such, there is nonetheless a bug report for it: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=85205
