About the sandbox, you can find some info here and you have to keep in mind that it doesn't have all functionalities than the official framework, it is really intended for board games that only need interaction with the pieces (board, cards, dice, etc.) and not other actions from the players.

In the zone properties, you could change the "How to arrange elements on it" to "Stack/Deck", I think that should do it.

I wanted to fix/add some info in the SandboxScripts page but I can't login, I tried with my player and dev logins.
Is the wiki only accessible to some people?
If yes is it possible to make some suggestions to edit pages?

One way to "preload" may be to add an <img with the image url and display:none.

It is quite unusual, but I think that is because of the multiplayer part, to ensure that all players are on the same page on the current game. That said, I think that the original idea was to use counter from the graphic elements for such cases. And the sandbox only target basic and/or abstract game...

Regarding the globals, if I am not mistaken it is because the script part is executing on the server, thus it is stateless and globals aren't modified.
