They're in different places in the tree nursery. And you don't have to buy 12 different trees, just have 12 points from trees (some of which may come from tree tokens).

Sure, use table restrictions on who can join tables you start. You can restrict by reputation, which should stop people who have a habit of cancelling games from joining yours. Or just play with your friends.

For those us us playing a live game, you can choose whether to go ahead once you see the players who have accepted, so if you don't want to play with Russians you don't have to. But in a turn based game if you create the game, a Russian can join and you have no choice but to play, unless they agree...
