You have a do down menu below the option of real time or turn based. You can pick "friends only" "automatic" or " manual". If you're seeing up a game you choose manual. If you want to automatically join,you click auto and it will match you to your settings.

I was going to let it slide byt they've started and played in multiple turn based games during the time they've been timed out so was going to skip itheir turn.
