The Crazyiest BGA Contest Ever : Legendary Inventors Ultimate Contest

Sometimes, something totally crazy happens. Something like:

• A game designer and his publisher come to us to have their new game on Board Game Arena (happiness level: 1).
• They want to have the game online even before it is available in shops, to allow the community to "try-before-you-buy" (happiness level: 10).
• They want to organize a giant online world contest with the game as soon as it is available online (happiness level: 100).
• The prize is the Biggest Prize Every Player Can Imagine (happiness level: 1.000.000....)

We are please to introduce the craziest BGA contest ever: Legendary Inventors Ultimate Contest.

Legendary Inventors is a game by Fred Henry (Timeline, The Builders, Conan, ...) published by Bombyx, available in shops on November 18th and already available for pre-order.



On next Monday, October 24th at 20:00 CEST, the game will be made available online on Board Game Arena, and the Contest will start immediately.

Your mission will be to be on the BGA Top 3 (ELO ranking) on November 6th at 20:00 CEST.

The prize is the following: the entire future production of Bombyx and Monolith.

Pause. Rewind. Let's replay it again: the winners are going to receive one copy of each future game produced by these 2 publishers, including Legendary Inventors and Conan, for the rest of their lives.

This is a bit concerning considering the way the rating system currently works on this site. Notwithstanding the possibilities of players simply playing against alternate accounts or their friends in order to boost their ELO, the ELO system is fundamentally flawed. Its tuning parameters come from informally tuning the system to Chess, which is game which has outcomes with much lower variance than most of the games on this site. Because the outcomes of games on this site have much higher variance, players can improve their ELO simply by always playing against players with a higher ELO, and refusing to play with players with a lower ELO. If ratings-systems-based competitions continue to happen on this site, I hope BGA will look into improved ratings systems which are tuned to the amount of variance in individual games.

If any of the site owners are interested in innovating novel ratings systems, I think it would be great for BGA to be on the cutting edge of skill estimation.

Thanks for your feedback. A discussion is in progress about that here, and yes we are working on improvements. But as you can imagine, we can't change the rules of the ranking just before a Contest like this. So even if it has some flaws, ELO system will do the job here as it is doing the job for 6 years on BGA

Thanks sourisdudesert! I've sent a message to your team (I sent it before I read your response).

Changing the skill rating system on the site would definitely be a big project, especially since more sophisticated statistical skill rating systems are relatively untrodden territory! BGA is a great source of data and application for research which I am interested in.
