Read MySQL Database with a DB Client

Post by stefano »

Hello,

is it possible to access the MySQL database with a DB Client application (like HeidiSQL), avoiding using the webUI, that seems to be very slow?

Hello,
We don't expose the default mysql port publicly, so it's not possible to access through another client application, only through the webUI.
The slowness is not linked to the webUI, it's a database issue that needs proper investigation and DBA time, and maybe a version upgrade. See this post for details viewtopic.php?f=12&t=16881&p=64472#p64472

Can't you offer it on a non-default port? Isn't brute force attempts on PMA web UI just the same thing as brute force attempts on MySQL directly? MySQL has built-in features to block IP addresses that make too many bad attempts, as well...

The PMA webUI is always going to be much slower, even if the database is performing quickly, because it runs additional queries needed to populate the UI screens, dropdown menus, etc. that a desktop client like MySQL Workbench would only need to run once instead of repeatedly on every page load. It's definitely not as feature-rich as a desktop client, either.

Anything is possible, and we are aware that everyone has their favourite tools, and that they may be better. Just we have to make choices and decide what we can manage...

Slowness hopefully solved, please see viewtopic.php?f=12&t=18475
