The one that stands out in my memory most is Escape from Atlantis. I bought it at a jumble sale at my sisters school and then it became the only game we wanted to play for some time.

Sorry, Aggravation, Uno (yeah, okay, not board but card, but Solo exist on BGA and it's also not board!), Life, Monopoly (unclear why, I think I always lost)

then the more esoteric, beginnings of hobby games: Nuclear War, Cosmic Encounter, Dune, Star Fleet Battles, Car Wars, Illuminati, Talisman

Masterpiece, loved the currency and forgeries in the game.

My dad was an original board game geek. For reasons that he never quite explained, he was into the board games of Brian Taylor, so we had both Kensington and Skirrid. I particularly remember Skirrid with its tetronimoes and its big numbered board. Sadly, the physical copies of both games were lost after he died. Blokus, while a very different game, does scratch some of that itch.

Mine included Trivial Pursuit (invented just a few roads away from where I currently live),
Clue, Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, Pictionary (like Pingimus), and the card game Cribbage as well as the dice game of Yahtzee, as are also available here at BGA.

Cluedo. I sort of turned into a murder mystery RPG and played it by myself. 45 years later I can't remember or begin to understand how I made it work but I played for hours.
All I do recall is that for some reason everyone hated Mrs Peacock.
