Trying to use the distress signal. The game says cards will be passed "to the left" but which way is that? Clockwise, or counter-clockwise?

In the current implementation, left and right are direction from a sitted player point of view.
Hence, left = clockwise and right = counter-clockwise.

The game development has been taken over by another volonteer, maybe the new version will add some features which will enlight this...

I'd like to see the distress signal not something you must acknowledge every turn. It's not that big of a deal if people don't remember it's available.

That's because you are an experienced player. A lot of new players didn't even know it existed or how to enable it.
I've just added an auto-answer option that should satisfy experienced players
