Thanks. Yeah I guess it's not that abnormal. For the last project I just got a bit bored and wanted to try something different, and I needed a big-bang ending in which to stop playing and start doing something else in RL, and also a bit of the nothing ventured, nothing gained.

27 - 11 : Caylus, Gaia, Hive, Gyges

Post by RicardoRix »

All of these games I've played before, so no first impressions.

Caylus: RicardoRix win.
Very one sided game. I really like Caylus bit it's a bit dry flavour so don't really play it much, still a solid game would happily play again.

Gaia:
WOW!! Great ending turn by Ivardo to get 3 points in his final trurn and win 6-4. On my last turn I just thought that I'd got the win in the bag with so many multi-colour and other cities to play.
As for the game, I really like it, fairly simple but I think has a lot of hidden strategy to it. A great modern short style game, with plenty of options to play variants.

Hive: RicardoRix win.
Another great, great short game. Go give it a try. Insect tile and special movement to trap the opponents HoneyBee!

Gyges:RicardoRix win.
Yeah, yet another good game, by the seems of it has a strong french connection. I'd never heard of it till BGA, A 2-player abstract with some good strategy and thought required to earn the win.

28 - 12 : Hanabi, Go, Gomoku

Post by RicardoRix »

Hanabi:
We did not win, not even close, no where near.
This game HAS to be tried if you've never played it, BUT I think you need to play this with players you know, like preferably in Real life so you can talk over skype - it's all about the learning experience. A very simple but brilliantly crafted co-op deduction game, raw and brilliantly merciless.

Go: RicardoRix win.
What to say about the ancient game?? Well it's pretty cool IMO. I am still at the 9x9 board beginner stage but really like it when playing at a similar ability opponent.
https://en.boardgamearena.com/#!table?table=42608953

Gomoku: Ivardo win.
"5 in a row" on a 2-d board. A bit like an advanced version of connect 4. Yeah - I have nothing against the game - still learning so can't really comment too much. It's so-so, I play it with friends, but perhaps don't like it enough to choose to start a game myself.

31 - 14 : Gosu, Djambi, Hex, Haggis, Four Color Cards, Hawaii.

Post by RicardoRix »

Gosu: Ivardo win.
I don't know what to say, it's crap - there I said it, a crap card game with cool looking goblins - who would have thought!
I think I was left with 10 cards in hand because I couldn't play them, is that a bad card draw, or bad strategy? who knows??
So this is overcomplicated and random piece of .... but I suppose it looks good, so you at-least think you had fun.
https://en.boardgamearena.com/#!table?table=42647599

Djambi: SaberNikfar win.
First impressions: It seems pretty cool, I'd like to try it again, but I can't say I really knew what was happening.
It's a 4-player game, with 9 pieces each fight out to be the lone last leader. I think I may prefer the idea of the game more if it was 2v2. Or if each player could play 2 teams each.
https://en.boardgamearena.com/#!table?table=42269476

Hex: RicardoRix win.
Abstract game with LOTS of hidden depth to it, i LOVE it! But I don't like losing, coz, well.. I'm a bad loser. If you like the challenge then it's a very quick game with the simplest rules ever for game. Go try it! But play with an opponent of similar ability.
https://en.boardgamearena.com/#!table?table=42647719

Haggis: RicardoRix win.
Stole the game with one big-bang round. I bet 30 to totally ruin the idea of strategy wins you games by fully exploiting an unfair card draw.
Nevertheless, Haggis is an excellent game. Really cool, fairly easy to pick up and plays very quickly when you get used to it.
https://en.boardgamearena.com/#!table?table=42647687

Four Color Cards: Ivardo win.
Weird, untamed user interface and a very bizarre play order makes this game a disaster. I think it has promise, essentially like the card game rummy, but it doesn't flow well and I'm not sure (because I don't know the game well enough) the points scoring works properly. I went out in the last round first but didn't score any points :S I would avoid this one unless you are already familiar with it. Try haggis instead.

Hawaii: RicardoRix win.
Was my 2nd favorite game on BGA, may now be my 4th or 5th after RFTG, Tzolkin, and 7 wonders. Still, it's an awesomely underrated game IMO.
It has a lot of balance and agonizing decisions, can't fault it, I love it!
It's a medium length game, resource gathering, build and point score kinda game.
I beat Ivardo with 207 points! Now you don't get that every day, but admittedly it was very much an all you can eat hawaiin buffet

36 - 14 : Hypnosia, Innovation, Ice Hockey, In The Year of the Dragon, Jump Gate

Post by RicardoRix »

Jump Gate: RicardoRix win.
I managed to beat the top5 space pilot Ivardo!
You fly and fight to collect resources on planets with a 5 card hand. There is some strategy and a bit of luck in the card draws, and it definitely plays better with bigger groups I think. I've played it a fair amount so I don't dislike it, but it doesn't have too much going for it either. However I think it could be an expansion / rules tweak away from a great game.

In The Year of the Dragon: RicardoRix win.
Now this is a proper mind twister, sometimes savage game. I like it LOT! You really have to be on your game to come out on top. There is a constant fear and tension throughout the game. You try and manage and maintain your palaces and people while scoring as many points as possible.
Ivardo came out with a strategy I've never seen before, 2 tax collectors, I think I'll try that in a 4-player game and hang at the back with my elders.

Ice Cold Ice Hockey: RicardoRix win.
Yeah good game I think, quite confusing at the start. The implementation on BGA is superb! The flavour really shines through in the game play. However the game itself, while fun, lacks a bit of magic I think. Even so, I intend to play more games to see if it grows on me. Certainly worth a bash, it's a good solid little game.
https://en.boardgamearena.com/#!table?table=42713813

Innovation: RicardoRix win.
Oh yes! Innovation is remarkable clever, very well designed and thought out. Not by the looks of it, lots of text and strange terms, but by the dynamics of the gameplay which are just superb. You fight to score points and stay ahead in the different disciplines while also trying to evolve as quick as possible. The weird and wonderful ways you can do this are brilliant.
https://en.boardgamearena.com/#!table?table=42713846

Hypnosia: RicardoRix win.
No, no, no. It's ludo or frustration with a different name. Slightly more advanced perhaps, or even worse depending on your view point.
You shake dice and 'hope' to get the right number.

It's probably quite abnormal to try every single game though! I open a lot of a few games to try to get better at them, sometimes it helps. But in the case of Tzolkin it's just reaffirmed my suspicion that I am average at best :)

Hive is a great game though, both on BGA and in real life.

Just found your post. What a fun idea! I am a newer gamer so trying to learn many new games and mechanics. Completely understand wanting to try them ALL. Love the first impressions comments, and I think that I will try a couple of your suggestions. Did you play guildes yet? Wondering if your opinion is similar to mine.

Is there a board on which you can see players who can play many different games? I wonder how many players managed to play ALL BGA-games... I'm currently on about 70%.

I think playing many different games should be reflected in prestige-system. As for now - you cannot compete with some 1-game-overloard by mastering ALL games (i.e. 1x best player = 50.000 vs. 140x strong player = 14.000). Seems unbalanced to me.

Anyway - nice match you're playing there. Good luck to the both of you :D
