Warning by bga for mentioning another site

Post by gilco »

In a chat with another player during a game, we talked about point of strategy in this game and I mentioned an information I read on another website also specialized in board games online. Bga automatically generated a WARNING message urging me not to mention or promote this site allegedly irrespectuous of author rights.
I would like to know more about this policy on bga because I didnt read anything about it in any forum or in general information about users behaviour rules.
Could an admin answer it ?

Only information found in the FAQ
Et enfin, n'utilisez pas les canaux de communication de Board Game Arena pour faire la publicité d'autres sites de jeux. Si vous désirez parler de votre expérience ailleurs, vous pouvez par exemple juste dire simplement « sur un autre site de jeu ».

And, if you don't feel like translating from the French...

And finally, do not use Board Game Arena communication resources to advertise other gaming websites. If you want to talk about your experience elsewhere, please just say something like 'on another gaming website'.

Thx for the translation Jest.
I mean there's a difference between forbidden behaviour and simple recommendations on etiquette.
Bga should distinguish between advertising for another site and having a simple discussion. When I go to a shop I don't think the people who work here would yell at me because I tell a friend that I saw almost the same product in another one, if i don't hold a giant cardboard spelling : "this place sucks go to... !"
Did I made my point ?

Ah, but the chat system isn't "the people who work here." It is a bot who looks for trigger words. It is very difficult to program it to tell the difference between a casual mention and an advertisement.

Also, I used to work at the red big box retail store in the US. We did get upset every time we heard the name of the blue big box retail store mentioned.

Story: I was recently in a store looking for some supplies and they told me : we don't have that, you should go to ... and named their competitor and kindly told me where to find his nearest store. They regained a customer rather than lost one. ;)
Maybe the bot reacting to trigger words isn't the best idea. There's room for everyone irl and online.
Unless you tell me that "the site who must not be named" has really broken rules of fair competition against bga and/or laws on copyright which the text of the WARNING suggested.

Click the quote mark box in the upper right of the post you are wanting to quote.

As far as the rest of this discussion, like most issues in life, there are pros and cons to each side of the argument. But, BGA has stated a policy. Since this is their site, we need to abide by it. Just as in certain board games, no matter how silly the rule if we are to play an official game of it we need to follow the rule.

Thanks for the tip for the quote.
As for the rest, i agree that it could be an endless talk in which none would have the final word.
But I don't agree at all with your statement : in no game and in no community should we have to abide to the rules no matter how silly they are. I don't have to reach a Godwin point for this.
