New method to compute "connected players" on home screen

Post by sourisdudesert »

We recently change the way we are computing the number of "connected players" on welcome screen.

We figured out that some players were considered as "connected" while they were just keeping a browser open with Board Game Arena since days.

As these "zombie players" browser were consuming a lot of our resources, we are now disconnecting any browser with no activity (ex: no mouse move, no click) after 2 hours of inactivity.

As a consequence, the number of "connected players" has dropped. This is an improvement for those of you who are using "Suggestions" because now you are 100% sure that the players marked as "suggested" are not "zombies".

The number of "playing players" is processed exactly than before (number of connected player with at least 1 game in progress).

Please note that the number of "available players" is the difference between the two, so it has dropped too. However, we are thinking about removing this latest number as it has no real meaning: a connected turn based player is always available to play, and today it is counted as "playing player".

Speaking about general statistics: on November 3rd 2019, there have been more than 23.000 games played on Board Game Arena in 24 hours, which is a 10 years record for a single day :)
