It's face down, normally you cannot look at discard piles unless otherwise instructed, and I would also assume you can't count the discard pile unless told you can. As a general rule, the rules are responsible for telling you what you can do, and otherwise you can't. If they said everything you can't do, they'd be 1000 pages long.
Such a question does not arise because Seasons is not a memory game. Since a player can determine the numbers of cards in the draw pile and discard pile by taking notes, there is no reason not to display these numbers.
You don’t seem to realize that in a real game, the height of the draw pile and discard pile are visible, even if the faces of the cards are not, and that each player is able to visually estimate the number of cards contained in these piles. In particular, each player can immediately notice that one of these stacks is empty, and deduce that it will likely be inopportun to trigger an action or effect by drawing from an empty stack. However, this essential information is currently missing in the implementation.
I therefore invite you to vote for the implementation of this improvement.
