In addition to the usual first place trophy, this year's tournament will also feature more prizes. Twin packs of codes for Hive on Steam will be given to the top 30 finishers in the Swiss stage - and the top three finishers in the tournament will receive collector's copies of the original wooden version of Hive signed by the designer himself, John Yianni!
The tournament format has also been improved again, with simpler timing rules and a better qualification process for more accurate seeding. The first stage is Swiss style, so players with any amount of experience can join in and learn while facing opponents progressively closer to their own skill level.
Entrants will be expected to schedule and play real time games against assigned opponents at a pace of about two games per week, with some flexibility. Later stages of the tournament are structured to allow even more flexibility with scheduling. Games will be played with all expansions (Mosquito, Ladybug, and Pillbug), unless players agree otherwise before starting their games. Full rules are available here.
Sign ups are open until 16:00 GMT on Sunday April 15th, and the tournament will officially begin 8 hours after that. If you have any questions, you can contact the tournament committee at hivetournament(at symbol)gmail(dot symbol)com, or even just reply directly to this post and ask them.
Big thanks as always to Hive's eternally cool designer John Yianni, and publisher Gen42. And also to Dave Dyer at boardspace.net, for his incredible work and hospitality. Y'all make this unique 'by the players, for the players' tournament possible - and amazing!
