Hive Mosquito rules

Post by SleeperService »

According to the "official rules", if a Mosquito is in contact only with another Mosquito it may not move at all. But I've spectated two games on BGA where a Mosquito acts as a Pillbug because it is in contact with another Mosquito that contacts a Pillbug. The original Mosquito executing the move is not, itself, in contact with that Pillbug. In contradiction to the official rule, this would imply that a Mosquito only in contact with another Mosquito should be able to inherit from whatever that second Mosquito is in contact with.

Something's afoul here. Only three explanations occur to me.
• The Mosquito can inherit the special ability of the Pillbug through another Mosquito but not its movement.
• If the Mosquito is in contact with another piece as well as the other Mosquito it can inherit through that mosquito.
• This is a bug in BGA's programming.

The first two options seem needlessly complicated. Am I missing something?

Sounds very much like a bug:

strange it has not been raised already.

Randy,
Here's one example: Table #58655820, Move 22
"cKunka moves the Soldier Ant using a Mosquito copying a Pill bug"
There's another kinda example at Move 31, as far as the description, although the Pillbug could have effected this on its own.

It seems to me that liberties are being taken with, at least the intent of, the original rules. I.e., this would imply that a Mosquito in contact with only another Mosquito could inherit from whatever that other Mosquito was in contact with.

[PS, I've read your book and learned alot.]

In the noted moves, the mosquito is adjacent to a Pillbug. Where is the problem?

You're correct, bad example. It the game I saw live, but couldn't find in history, I thought a Mosquito inherited from another Mosquito which was in contact with a Pillbug. I may be wrong about this being inexperienced with expansion pieces.

BTW, how do you find an archived game by munber on the site?

Games -> Game Name -> scroll down to Latest Results, find a game.

Or, https://boardgamearena.com/gamestats?game_id=79 for hive.

Thanks for the response but I don't get it. I'm trying to find a game by its table number. For example, how do I locate the game, for playback, associated with Table #58655820? If I enter that into the By Game textbox, on the page you reference, I get "The value entered is not valid".

How did you locate that game from its table number?
[I got it, you must do this via http in the browser versus a search box within the BGA site.]
