Higher Reputation loss when quitting because you are losing

Post by NömadiçJay »

I've had a couple games that people specifically quit because they were losing and it ruins the game for everyone else playing and also takes away a "real" win from someone who was leading by a lot. In 2 player games it isn't as bad, but with more than 2 it is really disappointing. Maybe a larger penalty? Or at least maybe a warning... Like right now it shows timed out games and games quit or left, what about one for "quit while losing with multiple players". I don't know the solution to the problem, but that is extremely poor sportsmanship and should be punished more than just a 10 point reputation deduction.

This is why people's karma is limited when they get too many red thumbs. Plus, you can always give them a private red thumb to never play with them again.

One problem with this is having proof that that is why they quit, which is hard to come by, and without that proof, you're just making an accusation of something you believe to be true. People tend to assume that anyone who leaves while they are losing left intentionally because they were losing. But sometimes stuff just happens, and sometimes "stuff happens" coincidentally when someone is losing and they are totally innocent. (In other words, you're asking a piece of software to make a judgment call on something it can't possibly know about.)

Granted, reputation takes a hit if something goes wrong, like a connection, when the person is innocent of any wrong-doing. But that kind of thing is only going to happen occasionally and overall should not affect their rep a lot. (And if they have a generally bad connection, they shouldn't be trying to play live and messing other people up.) But someone who quits because they are losing is likely going to do it more than once and take that hit again. In the end, someone's rep is affected proportionately to how often something happens.
