Invited players cannot accept invitation -- how to debug?

Post by tarrockfan »

[Originally posted under Community, but I think that may have been a mis-categorization on my part. It has been read there, but no replies have materialized. Someone must know more about this than I do...]

I support a weekly gaming event with about 16 people who rotate in and out depending on their schedule, giving us 6-8 on a typical night.

On two evenings in the past month we have had players who have connected from a Mac be in the situation where they could not accept an invitation to a game. They received the invitation, and clicked like mad on the blue Accept button, but nothing happens. A screen refresh (or two, or three) does not help.

This week we had 8 players, including two first timers, so we split into two smaller groups. The first timer in my group was using a Mac. That player had completed a game of Incan Gold with us, but could not accept the invitation to the second game I set up. At my direction he refreshed the screen without effect. I expelled him from the game and re-invited him, still no good. Eventually he gave up, of course.

So, when this happens, how can I get a clue about what the problem is? This player is not an IT specialist, but has reasonable computer skills for someone who uses a computer in their work for research and document preparation. We have a Jitsi conference call, and if needed he could probably share his screen, but right now I do not know what to look for -- I think I would see his mouse pointer over the Accept button, and I knew that already.

Many issues stem from setting up the table. I would check there first.

With that, the table should be configured in manual mode. All configuration should be done before sending out the invitations -- there's a known issue (with turn-based games especially) that prevents table configuration changing after anyone has joined the table. (This is an issue, not a bug -- if you want to play with certain options turn-based, you shouldn't have those options changed after you join.)

It might be a good idea to create a group under the community tab, and have all your game group members join that. Then, the table can easily be restricted to members of that group.

Only after the table has been completely configured should invitations be sent out. If it doesn't work, record the time of the incident (GMT), and which operating systems/browsers were being used for table configuration and players who could and could not accept the invitations. Also, highlighting the accept link should exactly state the URL, and copying that would be helpful as well for debugging.
