Achievement: Conquer middle island

Hi,

I am looking for a clarification.

To get this achievement, does it mean you actually have to conquer (with outpost and conquer dice), or is it enough to settle on that island with the Nomads' ability to place buildings?

You must conquer it. The Nomads' ability to place a building here does not grant you the achievement, nor does attempting to topple a player who currently occupies it.

If, however, the Nomads place a building on the middle island then someone topples that building, the second player will claim the achievement since they successfully conquered it.
