When resolving an attack card, in order, the dmg from the attack is dealt, then post-attack effects from the reactions are resolved, and finally, post-attack effects from the attack are resolved. If your champion was taken out of combat by the dmg, then they are no longer on the battlefield and aren’t considered adjacent to anything, so the reaction effect is ignored.
