It would be saved indirectly by marking trash on that player's hand

For me in most games, the number of clues decrease over time, reach 0 and you try to not lose and keep alive most useful cards, and then you start to have lots of clues again.
After that moment of you lack of clues, I like thinking losing a single 'useful non critical' card could be avoided, and most of time, someone didn't optimise or there was miss communication.

There is exceptions (someone holding three 5s), but they are rare.
