Are solvers cheating?

Post by JeremyMaahs »

I like to review my lost games against a solver to see where I could have played different. Today, I played against a player who upon review played every move perfectly. As I looked over several of their other games, they were playing those with optimal moves every time. They were no doubt using a solver. So I went to report them, but there is no option to report someone for using a solver.

Is it not against the rules here?

If you code a solver yourself, would that count as cheating?

Yes, any script or database counts as 'an external assistance'.
For example, you cannot search through an opening book during a tournament game.

I noticed recently that there are no ranks for chess, but rather a link to an explanation that games that are solved or have readily available AI are unsuitable for competitive or ranked play on this platform.

Why is there rank for connect four, when it is a solved game with easily available database assistance?

The current Arena setting is a 10x10 board, which I don't think is solved or at least you won't find solvers/helpers easily. So for Connect Four, the issue was circumvented.

It is cheating not only that but absolutely annoying as well. it should be banned. this is for halfwits only.

I have over 500 elo at connect 4 and do not use a solver. However, I did spend a year studying connect 4 game theory as a project at university. :D
