Germany's 18. Inf.Div.-chit at start France 1940 ?

Post by Haspelhofen »

Dear all,

The Netherlands were invaded by Germany on the 10th of may 1940 by the 18th Infantry Division.
Just out of interest, I checked both the USE-playbook and Vassal on the France 1940-scenario.

I noticed that ...
1] the german 18. Inf.Div.-chit is missing on Vassals coordinate 2619 at the start of the France 1940-scenario, in contrast with the rulebook.
2] Instead of that, the Luftflotte 5 is positioned on that location in Vassal

Does anyone know happened here ?

Many thanks in advance ! :)

You might find it more useful to raise Vassal issues on Board Game Geek. Is it correct in the scenario here on BGA?

I see no trace of GER 18 for this scenario in the 2nd edition Playbook, Living Rules from 2021-04-15.
It was however there in 2619 in the 2nd edition original Playbook, and replaced (in the Living Rules) with the GER 5 Luf with 2 Sorties, in the same hex.

With this information, i understand the Vassal has a correct set up.

Haspelhofen, I see you showed an image from the 1st edition of the Playbook, which is no more up to date.

For what concerns the BGA set-up of this scenario, i saw both GER 18 and the 5 Luf present in hex 2619.

Thanks for your reply Own !

I checked the online Playbook on the GMT-site, which is tagged as "2nd Edition". https://www.gmtgames.com/p-885-uncondit ... nting.aspx
Maybe it should be named "2nd printing of the 1st Edition" ?

This is a more up to date document, and widely considered as official i guess :
https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/2005 ... ving-rules

It is an update from the 2nd Edition.
This living rules is more recent than the one i quoted (2021-05-31), but still has
  • no GER 18 in 2619;
  • 5 Luf in 2619.

USE does not have every historical army for various reasons, e.g. actual size or length of existence. If I recall correctly, n this particular case we did a walk thru of counters and found there were too many German armies in the France scenario relative to the Main Event scenario. Rather than add a German infantry army earlier (which the Germans really don't benefit very much from), we move the 5 Luf to the France scenario. A benefit to this was a better simulation of German air superiority at the time.
