Non-playing Player who has signed up for A LOT of tournaments

Yeah, FWF was evidently never talked to or dealt with.

It's actually in interesting question if anyone has tried talking to them. Well - I haven't myself (but I commented on stuff about that subject so shame on me!). But has anyone tried? Was there a response?

I thought we are not allowed to approach each other about this kind of stuff? You can be censored for saying anytihng. I really really wanted to when i saw I had to play FWF again and that they had already had 51 over times and many quit games and had 90% Karma anyway due to a fresh round of Lucky Numbers. I think BGA needs to talk to them since they ban us from saying anything. If you try to report them the system says they got a -4 karma so they have been punished as punished as BGA allows, so put up with it or leave!

I think it's a matter of how you do it. I don't see anything wrong in saying "Hi! I saw you have signed up for a lot of tournaments, but you seem to not play them. May I ask what's up with that?"

There is no punishment! This player gets countless thumbs down and they lose only 4 karma points which they make up instantly playing can't stop or lucky numbers. Then they sign up for every tournament out there again, play a few, and ruin hundreds more games by never showing up, rinse and repeat until other people leave. Nothing was done about this person as you will see if you read back on the threads about them. But all of BGA got new rules to try to fix the problem.

This is why many just don't want to play tournaments anymore. People like this ruin everything

Here is just the last three (3) days of penalites and this fool has 100% Karma again already. As you see, almost no karma taken and zero punishment and this stuff goes back to the beginning of time. There is no way to count how many games/ other humans this one person has harmed by being a bad community member. But BGA ruled this person is just fine as is an is not doing this on purpose, Look back on the thread but I believe the moderator decided if this person meant to be bad, they could and would do much worse. HOW CAN THEY BE WORSE THAN THIS STUFF:

I started a new group for tournament finishers to avoid the tiny number of terrible community members this thread is complaining about.

COME JOIN! Completely open to suggestions and changes- just wanted to start a solution since the big, BGA solution has clearly failed and we are still back where we started.

Are you sick of the not-to-be-named few who sign up for hundreds of tournaments than dont show up and ruin all your games and ELO? This tiny group then plays a few easy games to regain Karma and sign back up for more events to ruin. How about we start a group for tournaments those few bad players can't ruin? Only those who play and finish events get to join and can start any tournament for others in this group.


This group is intended as a connection point for serious players who like to sign up for time-based tournaments, and then login and actually play them. Currently, there is no way for a tournament organizer to do anything about an event that has one or more of those players who sign up for hundreds of time-based tournaments and then never show up. As you know, this leads to time outs with random winners, randomly being excluded, and many unplayed games. And there is not a way to report the players or stop them from moving to ruin the next round until all are affected. To fix this problem , I have created this group that is open to anyone who actually logs in and plays in tournaments.Then anyone can create an invite-only tournament for players who will really show up. Post your tournament here and have interested people message you. Organizers can check on player stats and decide if they want to send the invite to that player. If you don't get an invite you requested- don't get upset. Instead, create your own tournament! If you create an invite-only tournament, you can post about it here to get players. If you are a player who could not show up for some reason (in hospital, home burned down, was broke out...) just explain to the organizer when you ask for an invite. Say- hey, I know I missed some tournaments I signed up for but life happened, and I couldn't get online for awhile. I'm back now,. Please give me a chance to get my game going again. Then show up like you promised and build back your good tournament name. If you dont show up after getting this extra chance, don't wonder why you don't get another invite.

This player could care less about their effect on any other human playing. This behavior has been ongoing (and unaddressed) for years. Those buttons would not help this problem. Really truly can't comprehend why this type of problem is just left there to ruin the site for everyone else.

It should be clear by now that the karma system does nothing to stop this kind of behavior. It only hurts people who play a relatively small number of games. It happens to everyone- you get sick, busy, travel to a place with poor internet, etc. However, because this person signs up for hundreds of games at a time, as long as they finish some short games every day, they are still able to maintain 100% karma despite ruining several games on a daily basis (and by extension, negatively impacting hundreds of others by hurting the integrity of the tournament).

If BGA actually wanted to deal with this issue, they could do a number of things 1) escalating karma penalties for multiple abandoned games 2) no karma floor/negative karma so that every game abandoned counts against you and you can't immediately restore yourself to 100% by playing a few short dice games, or 3) just directly sanction the one bad actor causing 99.9% of these complaints instead of trying to design a flawless karma system.

Here is the automated response when you try to report this player for abandoning games:

"The first player to quit a game in progress receives a leave penalty and an ELO penalty corresponding to a game loss. Thus, there is no need to report this player (although you may want to give the player a red thumb if they quit intentionally)."

Red thumbs do not protect tournament players from having to deal with this person when they appear in their bracket. The leave penalty does nothing, as evidenced by the fact that they still have 100% karma despite recently abandoning 93 games and timing out of 333. They clearly don't care about the ELO penalty (incidentally, this just punishes the opponents they do actually finish games against by keeping their ELO artificially low).

The assertion that this isn't deliberate behavior no longer passes the smell test. It has been a repeated pattern for years. It is evident that the moderators have not even attempted to dialogue with this player, because in the past they have just given a cursory look at their history and said "well, we know it's not deliberate because they could have ruined so many more games." How many games would they have to abandon to take this seriously? Why does BGA prioritize protecting one troll to the detriment of thousands of other users? Why is there still no way to report behavior like this other than taking it to the forums?

It's actually in interesting question if anyone has tried talking to them. Well - I haven't myself (but I commented on stuff about that subject so shame on me!). But has anyone tried? Was there a response?

I thought we are not allowed to approach each other about this kind of stuff? You can be censored for saying anytihng. I really really wanted to when i saw I had to play FWF again and that they had already had 51 over times and many quit games and had 90% Karma anyway due to a fresh round of Lucky Numbers. I think BGA needs to talk to them since they ban us from saying anything. If you try to report them the system says they got a -4 karma so they have been punished as punished as BGA allows, so put up with it or leave!

I think it's a matter of how you do it. I don't see anything wrong in saying "Hi! I saw you have signed up for a lot of tournaments, but you seem to not play them. May I ask what's up with that?"

Idk, seems pretty hyperbolic. Quitting games (even thousands of them) doesn’t make them a war criminal.

It does, however, negatively affect a lot of people’s experience using the site, particularly in tournaments. It seems like a lot of time and energy has been devoted to hashing it out, denying it’s a problem, and/or crafting elaborate (but ineffective) solutions. Has anyone on the admin side of things tried just sending a message to say something like: “please stop registering for hundreds more tournaments then you can possibly complete, or we will have to restrict your ability to enter them at all”?
