A variant that we would play with when we are playing with kids is that on their turn to draw, people will take three words/phrases and choose to draw one of them. This tries to reduce the luck factor and adds an element of choice, especially for younger players. Without this house rule, sometimes a younger player would feel disappointed about getting a complicated phrase to draw when everyone else around the table received easy one-word clues to draw.
