Is it worth having a 4x3 game? What about other heights?

Post by Stuff by Bez »

I imagine - like playing Go on a 7x7 - this would quickly feel a bit simplistic. But I'm wondering if it'd be a nice way to practise/learn, and try out different strategies.

The width clearly has to be even, but I'm also wondering if the height could be different.

What would an 8x2 board be like? Or even 8x1?

What about 6x4?

I did program an 8x3 for BGA. It's selectable when issuing a challenge. There was some discussion about recommended sizes early on. One consideration is that game length grows exponentially with board length. With too short of a board, first (or second) turn advantage could become an issue. But certainly any even length board with any height stacks would be playable. The stacks don't even have to have uniform height. They could be taller in the middle for example.

I've played 8x3. I enjoyed it though it feels a little long.

What do you think about 4x3 or alternative heights?

This does sound quite intriguing btw.

I love how Silo feels like quite a flexible game - similar to Hex/Go.
