YouTube content for Castles of Burgundy

Post by fortitud3 »

Hello everyone!

I really enjoy playing Castles of Burgundy with my partner, both online and over the table. I have been adding some Castles of Burgundy content to my YouTube channel. The type of videos for Castles of Burgundy that I currently have and also plan to cover in the future are:
  • Gameplay analysis of my BGA games (mostly 2 player, but will cover some 3 and 4 player games as well)
  • Live gameplay videos
  • Strategy Tip of the Week series
  • Strategy discussions with BGA Master and Elite players (future content)
  • BGA Tournament games analysis (future content)
  • Over the table games for Castles of Burgundy Special Edition and 2019 edition (future content)
If that sounds interesting to you, you can check out the channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@strategymeeples

Link to most recent video: https://youtu.be/7typpZhA0ds?si=BSb7nKfe6huRwiaa

I watched your video Castles of Burgundy: fortitud3 vs GreenCheckRedX GAME 1 and the main conclusion was that GreenCheckRedX won from the very beginning because he dominated on Ships.

I thought Castles of Burgundy was a fairly balanced game, but can you really win from the beginning by simply controlling Ships and getting first turn in all the rounds? It seems far greater than the first turn advantage in chess.

Most games are fairly balanced. Usually you might get an opportunity as second player to pickup enough water mid-game to surpass your opponent in turn order and maybe get some high-scoring tiles over them. Doesn’t always happen; you can still keep the game fairly close by pressuring castles and mines while your opponent is going after water.
Ultimately we cannot control what will show up in the black market and when. This of course means that there will be a few games where the person controlling water from the beginning will have a high chance of success if no other good tiles show up on the board. Luck is still a big part of the game in my opinion and that’s what makes it challenging. Playing optimal moves and competing with your opponent for key bonuses usually balances out that luck and makes the games more even.
