GIANT DAM

Post by total board games »

Hello I'm an old "expert" player in the game
The game would be better by rebalancing the giant dam card which gives too big an advantage if it is drafted turn 1. If the player can place it turn 1 and use it with flying laboratory, the game is almost over
whatever the game and the opponent this card placed T1 gives a win rate >80% for average or superior players

Do you actually have a statistic for that or is it just your gut feeling. It is a good card, but there are many good cards. Giant Dam requires 3 discards to get up on Round 1. so you can focus on counterdrafting your opponent. Yes it is good, but I don't think it's even remotely close to >80% win rate. I'd be happy to discuss it more.

EDIT: I'm surprised you're up in the 500 ELO and still believe this.

I agree it is a dominant starting card, but I don't mind it. I think the beauty of the game is trying to overcome the luck element and that some variance is important to the game. There's only a 6% chance that your opponent is dealt Giant Dam. And then if they are dealt it, I'd say only a 75% chance they can build it in round 1 (proper defense against Giant Dam being dealt to the opponent is an important round 1 drafting strategy). So we are talking about around 4% of games where you are up against it. And, then, the opponent still probably only has an 80% chance (by your estimation) of winning? That's down to 3% of games? And that assumes that the other player is an expert (I think 500+ ELO player is accurate definition of expert in this case) and knows how to press the advantage of round 1 Giant Dam? That seems pretty reasonable to me. And I greatly enjoy the challenge of trying to overcome my opponents being dealt Giant Dam. It is a challenge, but it is doable.

I also don't consider it that much more powerful than Magnetic Train. And I think the actual most powerful thing in the game is a round 3 or round 4 Atlantis. That probably swings more games than a round 1 Giant Dam. If your opponent is going black/blue generals and you're in the lead, significantly, and going white/yellow financiers and then they spike a round 4 Atlantis, that to me is more powerful.

There are going to be dominant cards that swing games and some randomness. Overcoming that and planning for it and defending against it is the beauty of the game to me. And what makes 2-player non-expansion It's A Wonderful World, my favorite game ever by a lot, is that it is a "luck" game with a lot of randomness, but talented players can almost always overcome that luck, especially against non-elite opponents.

Why should BoardGameArena balance the card. The card is part of the original game. And I read something on the website that said something like: 'BGA promotes these boardgames to a wider audience'. Thus, not necessarily changing the rules. Your issue with the card should be brought up with the boardgame designers of 'It's a wonderful world', not BGA.

other games have community balance modes, there is no reason this game cannot also. The balance mod would need to be created and then implemented in BGA before we could even consider it for Arena play.

I would love to see C&A added which I think provides sufficient additional meta and helps balance out Atlantis, Mag Train and Great Dam

Hi, I'm one of the two developers for It's a Wonderful World.

We don't get to just balance things based on our gut feelings or even based on hard statistical data. The BGA implementation is intended to be a virtual implementation of the physical game. If you feel like a rebalance in merited, please reach out to the publisher and they can contact us directly with the go-ahead to change the game.
