ALICE CHESS! where is it?! Easiest Request ever!

Post by gabe69velasquez »

Hello Chess players,

There is a long list of games that are being voted on that could be added to BGA,
But it seems no one has considered how easy it would be to add ALICE CHESS.
A second board and relatively minor code changes and VOILÀ we have a new game.
I personally find ALICE CHESS far more interesting than CHESS 960 (where's that also?).
If you are a chess player and you know other chess players on here,
then I encourage you to pass this on, look for it on the vote list, and vote.

Seems to be the "alimentation chess game"? played since 1985 in Reims.
Two boardgames, your partnair has the other color. Once you take a piece, you can share it.
You can place a shared piece instead of playing a standard action except :
- you cannot check directly the king
- you cannot put a pawn at line 1 or 8
- if you promote a pawn, once it's shared, it come back to a pawn.
time is 10 minutes for each player.

The goal is to take the king, and you can play a forbidden action (for example put your king in a attacked square)
you can ask for pieces and you can wait on your clock... but once a clock is down the game stops. (or when the king is taken)

No, it's not, I think you need a better translator, Lol.

"alimentation chess" doesn't come up on any searches anywhere,
it's like you wrote a bunch of gibberish to mock me.

Where as Alice chess is a legit game with many sites about it:

Hello Gabe!

Chess 960 is available here. It's in the game options when setting up a table.

What Exosquelette described is Bughouse Chess. It's a common chess variant that indeed uses two boards (and 4 players). As there's not many chess variants out there that uses 2 boards, it's easy to see how this would get confused with Alice Chess. "Alimentation chess" was not typed to mock you.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem Chess is actively maintained. It was made a long time ago by the original BGA team. It's unlikely that Alice Chess, Atomic Chess, Horde Chess, or any other variant of chess other than Chess 960 will be added. There are other popular sites that offer these variants. The only other variants of Chess on this site are Xiangqi (Chinese chess), Shogi (Japanese chess, currently in Alpha), and Let's Catch The Lion (3x4 Shogi variant).

Hope you find this information helpful!

Well thank you for that, even if it is very discouraging.
It's truly a shame considering how easy it would be to add.
I guess I can investigate if regular players are allowed to add games.

Yes, "regular players" are pretty much the only ones adding games.

I just got an IM from you, suggesting that you're asking all the BGA developers you can find to do it for you. Despite what you may think, this is far from a simple change. I have a dozen BGA implementation under my belt, but what you're describing would probably take me a week of work, plus all the followup time tackling bug reports and user suggestions.

I'm happy you're excited for it. Expecting someone to do it for you then telling them how easy it is may come off as a little demeaning. Might I suggest another approach? Be the change you want to see in the world. If this sparks joy, implement it yourself! It may not be easy, but if it's something you love then it'll be fulfilling.
