Can anyone help me figure out why my slipstream was 2 and not 5 on this move? I am pretty new to the game, so I might be misunderstanding something.

I‘m not sure i know the move you are referring to. There was nothing unusual before you spun out on lap 2. Your slipstream card goes into the discard after you boost? Only basic cards(1,2,3,4) are valid when resolving boost and + cards.

It is because slipstreaming cannot be used to cross the finish line (nor after having crossed the finish line). Your +5 slipstream would have done that, but the option to not use the R.P.M. and take only the +2 slipstream was available.
