i think development was abandoned due to some sort of issue regarding the licencing rights to it!(can't say for certain, just basing this on some other things that were in alpha and met a similiar fate)

Ah, that would be a bummer. I only discovered this game now thanks to the post of @QuenT1T, but it seems really nice, so I'm testing it out now.

The fact that it's now in beta means that it will find its way eventually to the final stage, right?
