Rules as implemented not as written?

Post by Bosuonparedo »

At the end of a round, all cards get flipped face-up and scored. But the rulebook seems to indicate this should not be the case - it says face-down cards do not score.

Is the rulebook wrong or is BGA wrong?

Let's say the rulebook is incomplete, because it does not explicitly say that unused Mojo timer cards are turned-face up once anyone else had turned up the last of their mojo cards.

However, Chad Elkins of 25th Century Games, one the publishers of Mojo, wrote:
all face down cards being used as mojo timers are flipped over to their suit/number side and scored

That's as close to an official rules clarification as you're going to get without them reprinting the rulebook.

It actually makes sense, because elsewhere in the rules for Mojo time it says:
These cards will not be played and will be scored at the end of the round.
It doesn't say this only applies to the first player to go into Mojo time. So if only face-up cards or cards in your hand are scored, and all cards that were placed face down in Mojo time "will be scored," then the only way to reconcile this is to turn the face-down mojo timers face up.

Where does it say so? Are you referring to the rule summary on BGA? This is made by the community and not authorised by anyone.

Yes, that’s it. Unfortunately, the English rulebook forgot to mention that those cards have to be revealed at the end of the round, but how else could you score them (in a physical game)?

The German rulebook is clear about this, it says: "Rundenende: Berechnet jetzt eure Punkte für diese Runde. DECKT dazu noch verdeckt vor euch liegende Karten AUF…", which translates as: "End of round: Now calculate your points for this round. For that REVEAL the cards lying face down in front of you…"

There are already 2 reports about this which have not yet been answered by the developer:

I fixed the rule summary on BGA to match the clarification by Chad Elkins on BGG and the German rulebook.
(It should become visible soon).
