Confused about Mermaid color bonus

Post by SarahofBorg »

I’m thoroughly confused about the Mermaid color bonus. I have the physical game and play here on BGA.
Here’s a link to screenshots of a current game:

Move #222, game:

For SaraofBorg, why is the color bonus three? Shouldn’t it be five with three black plus two Mermaids?

For LessaFlux, why is the color bonus three? Shouldn’t it be four with the three light green cards plus one Mermaid?

It looks like this is after someone called "last chance" and won their bet. In that case the winning player scores their actual card points plus their color bonus, while everyone else just gets their color bonus.

"color bonus" in this context just means "1 point per card of the color you have the most of", and is therefore correct for the examples you mention. Mermaid scoring, although related, is something different - in particular, the points you get from Mermaids, although calculated from colors, are part of what I called above the "actual card points" and therefore aren't taken any account of if another player called Last Chance and won the bet.

Regardless of what I said in my last post, I fear you're misunderstanding mermaids anyway, because there's no way 3 of a colour plus a mermaid would score 4 points in any context (in themselves that mermaid would only score 3, assuming that's the colour the player has the most of).

You seem to be maybe thinking a Mermaid counts as a "wild" color? There's nothing in the rules that suggests that so if that's your belief, it's definitely wrong and I don't know where you get it from.
