Where did the misses count originate?

I own this game and took a look at my copy of it to try and find where the x misses came from (not talking about forest tokens) and couldn’t find it in my copy of the rules. Where did this rule come from?

It's a timer based on gems and tricks remaining: when it reaches -1, players can't win the game even if they win a gem in each trick remaining.

I understand what it does, I’m curious to know why it’s in BGA and not in the game I own.

Because I added this as a player aid feature on my own.
Tracking this counter is not so easy in the physical version after all.

I found that the miss counter reached zero in our third round even when we both had two cards left to play: https://boardgamearena.com/14/thefoxint ... layFrom=97

I see this is because there were three gems left, and two tricks to play. I suggest it shouldn't force end of game in this situation, but allow you to play on if you wish (or agree to end the game).

The physical game rules would allow you to play on until the end to see how close you got: "If any gem tokens remain on the board at the
end of the third round, the game ends in a defeat."
