Why can't we each place all our pieces at the same time?

Post by JoysJoy »

Hi

Just learning to play this one and I'm confused at the huge waste of time it is to have to take turns placing our pieces.

Why is it this way? How can it affect the other player where I put my pieces?

Can't we just place all our pieces at the same time, rather than wait for the other to place one set, then me, then them, then me....

I don't think this slow torture needs to happen

It matters when you take tiles from the central supply ;) You can take tiles others want, or delay hoping other players will renew the tiles before you take bonus tiles.

I agree...I'm just learning it (and enjoying it0, but there doesn't seem to be any logic behind the his turn/my turn for placing tiles.

Choosing them, yes...but placing them- there is no difference in the outcome regardless of where my opponent places their tiles.

The game rules explicitly say that tiles are placed one by one, in turns. Simultaneous placement would be a house rule and only allowed if the publisher/designed agreed to it. The order is significant for taking tiles from the supply spaces (scoring bonus), at least.

Thanks...but in a turn-based game, it takes forever (actual days!).

People play turn-based so they can play over the course of a few days. In the settings, you can even select like 1 turn a day... so yeah, it's going to take actual days.
If you wish to play faster, pick rooms where the settings are several turns a day or just play real time games.

As said above, the turn order matters as players will be able to pick up more tiles during placement from the central flower if they surround windows, statues or pillars. If I don't like the colours in the central flower, I will try to delay by placing other tiles until someone else reveals new tiles in the centre. If there's the perfect tile for me to claim like the Wild colour for example, I will try to claim it asap on my turn.

The critical piece to the tile laying phase, that MUST continue to be executed in turn order, (and NOT simultaneously), is because of the immediate step of choosing bonus tiles from the central flower, as a direct result of placing tiles that surround bonus spaces (the statue, the pillar, the window).

As indicated by above post, the order matters since your choice of available central bonus tiles may impact positively your own timely advantage or negatively to your opponents' disadvantage. It may be in your interest to observe your opponents' strategy.

This may be a new mechanic in AZUL Summer Pavilion that is unfamiliar to new players that were accustomed to en masse, end of round scoring, in AZUL (original).

I agree with SquashEngineer's explanation. Plus, like to add, in the ultimate round the placing in turns of tiles is even a critical decision maker of who will win the game. It's the Rummikub hassle that makes or brakes what you build up. Seeing what someone else is doing give you insight of what colours wil soon be gone from the bonus flower, or when to strike for your own gain.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the tile laying phase becomes very, very long.
My regular gaming group got sick of it and don't want to play it again. :(
