How to win

Post by Elarius8 »

I just started playing Splendor and I like it, but I am having trouble figuring out a good strategy to win. I know I'll need some of the more expensive cards, but I need to get some of the smaller ones paid for first. I'd love it if someone helped me some with the strategy of the game.

Determine what the good cards are and determine what the good colors are. For cards worth more than 0 points, a rough estimate might be the number of tokens it costs to buy the card divided by the number of points you get for buying it. That tells you how many tokens you're paying per point. The more tokens your point costs the worse the card. The 4 pointer for 7 tokens is the best deal in those circumstances, frankly most of the single color costed 2 pointers and 3 pointers give you a good deal too if you do the math. For the 0 pointers, obviously the fewer tokens you have to pay the better, 3 being as low as it gets, making them stand out early on. When looking at color quality look at what the best cards need and try to keep getting those tokens turn after turn. Also look at what you're intended to buy in the short-term so you get the tokens to go for it. There's a limited supply of tokens, so be greedy and take the good stuff for yourself, both for your own score and so your opponent can't use them as easily. The nobles are a bit slow, so if the card quality for the point scorers is high there's a good chance the game ends before the nobles are useful, though if things drag out due to low card quality or heavily defensive tokens warfare the nobles may find their way into the scoresheets.

Thank you. I’ll keep working at it.
