Designer here. I do not recommend Random crew if you want balance in your game. And the way the game works, you'll have to deal with randomness already.
But, if you want to try cards that you'd not find in certain player counts, go for it.

But I've seen people become frustrated by that, not knowing they're not playing the official version.

Have fun nonetheless!!!

This is interesting - I actually strongly prefer playing random crew. It makes the non-crew cards more important since the crew cards are so unpredictable. It allows for different strategies, especially if you're not able to make harmonies with your crew. The base game wasn't as fun to me.

Thank you for designing - it's a great game!

Also without using random crew the singer with full harmony is impossible in 2 player games with blue or yellow lead singer. If you play a 3 player game without random crew then starting as either blue or yellow puts you at a disadvantage as there is one less lead singer for both of them. And the yellow one needs 3 red musicians and there are only 3 in the 3 player deck. Random crew takes away the small advantage of picking purple or red to start. However I think the biggest advantage of starting either Purple or Blue is being able to quickly take agenda goals early when your lead singer shows up early.
