Am I blind, or is the number of their house not given in the linked example? :?

You are not blind. The mother and the salesman both know the number of the house, but we don't. That's the point. Knowing that the sum is not enough, already tells us what it is. See the solution link if you're lost.

Ah ok. So the number has to be something that can be summed more than one way from the available options.

Play competitive mode then. Everyone has a chance to guess last.

In two player this is very annoying (exept if we enable the competitive mode). The issue could have been easily avoided by asking at the start of each round both player to choose if they want to guess a number or not .
