why do moderators allow harassment in this game?

Post by hewwo123 »

frequently i see people with 100% karma harassing others for making simple mistakes. this means they are not being moderated. their behavior does not fit with what is stated per the FAQ:

"What guidelines should I follow when communicating?
The general rule you should follow is to talk to people (in the forum, in the chat, ...) as if they were friends that you invited to play at your home. Then you'll naturally give them your attention and be kind to them so that everyone feels welcome and at ease. And it's always great to play with friends!"

why is this allowed?

I agree and people just keep telling me: then report them and just let it go. well, unless they use specific phrases, reporting them gets you in trouble for bothering the moderators.
Furthermore, when you choose to stand up to bullies you get in trouble from the moderators because you are supposed to just take it and asking bullies to stop repeatedly is harassing behavior.

The obvious question is: Do you report such harassment? If they're not reported, they will not be moderated.

Another point is that 100% karma does not mean they're not being moderated. They could have had a penalty and have recovered their karma (which is easy) since then.

Playing 25-50 Hanabi games is fast. Sometimes you wouldn't even notice the karma penalty because you play so many games each day.

I don’t know what you’ve been encountering from the people you play with. I long ago red thumbed a lot of people who treat others the worst, and it isn’t terribly easy to each a skill level where you’ll find yourself playing with me, so my experience is relatively curated (although I am aware that the people I have red thumbed still exist).

But I do want to point out that if I have friends over to play a co-op game, we’re going to talk about the strategy of the game. If they play really badly, I’m going to tell them that. If they ignore advice, and offer no interesting perspectives in return, and fail to improve their skill at the game, I’m going to stop playing that game with them. Maybe that means playing a different game, or maybe I won’t invite them over for games any more. (No gaming is better than bad gaming.) If they are genuinely terrible players, this won’t apply only to co-op play either; I have no desire to compete with opponents who can’t provide any challenge.

Some people do insult and/or harass on BGA, but I’ve never run into problems reporting them for it. I do hope that nobody here mistakes legitimate criticism of poor play for harassment - either when hearing it or when speaking it.
