What games benefit most from banter?

Post by brisdaz »

What games benefit most from banter: either pointing out actions which can help a player or colloborating with team mates to bring down a top player?

I like 3p to 4p takenoko and 3p to 5p coloretto.

If you didn't know there's a group devoted to it (well obliquely) - Talkative and Friendly Games BGA Group.

6 Nimmt has to the best for this, a fast easy party game with loads of 'take that' and 'Oh no!' moments.

I haven't played it but Saboteur sounds like it may be even better.

One game I play that has plenty of banter but always leads to an argument is Hanabi.

Definitely Saboteur! I'd say the whole point of it is the banter and guessing between players.

I would add Eruption, Noir: Killer vs. Inspector, and The Jelly Monster Lab.

Perudo does well with some banter. It's hard to bluff people when you let the facts do all the talking... :)

I would say sabotuer. In fact with no banter it is not enjoyable.

I think all games benefit from banter? Since without banter, a multiplayer game is just a singleplayer game (with an extremely tough unpredictable ai?)

I play Colt Express on a regular basis. I am always making small talk but nothing that really has to do with the play of the game.

If I were playing face to face with friends I would be saying things like 'If you punch me, I will shoot you back. If you punch him, I will shoot him also."
But here at BGA, I do not feel comfortable making comments like that.

Are these type of comments acceptable?

The problem is that you don't know how someone will react to things. They might not get that it's just banter. Games can be more fun if you can make jokes about stuff, make fun of yourself, that sort of stuff. But it is uncomfortable to do that in online games with strangers. I do make such comments with someone I've played with several times.

Although... as to the stuff OP is talking about, like discussing how you can bring down the top player and that sort of thing, I would not be too fond of that.
