Increasing the capacity of Board Game Arena

Post by sourisdudesert »

Dear all,

For one week now, more and more of you are coming to play here on Board Game Arena. We already explained here the first measures we took to make sure everyone can play without causing too much problems for the quality of this service.

After 4-5 days of word, we managed to increase the capacity of BGA from 5000 players at the same time to 9000 players at the same time. We are now capable to host 9000 players at peak hour without a crash.

However, as you may have noticed, this is not enough.

In order to make sure everyone can play in good conditions, we must limit the number of players to ~9000. As a consequence, some of you couldn't play as much as they want. We are obviously not satisfied by this, and we want to increase again BGA server capacity.

Unfortunately, going higher than 9000 needs to completely replace a key component of BGA by another (more powerful). This work started today and is going to take between 5 and 7 days.

Thus, we plan to increase the capacity of Board Game Arena on next Monday March 23th. Note that this date may evolve depending on how it goes. Board Game Arena service will be unavailable during several hours during the upgrade.

Sorry that we cannot make this happens faster, but we already did everything that was possible to do with the existing BGA infrastructure, and now we need to perform a huge change to increase server capacity above 9000 simultaneous players.

Thanks for your continuous support and patience during this difficult period.

Good luck. I specifically got a premium account to provide some financial support, and I encourage some of these thousands of users who might not be paying for a premium account to do the same.

We decided to undergo a maintenance operation to increase the service capacity today. The operations are currently ongoing.

We have switched our main server to a brand new, more powerful server. We are now synchronizing the data on this new server to make sure no one loses their favourite avatar! :)

The data transfer is moving along nicely. Avatars are safe and happy. We are now moving game archives so that you can still replay this great game from 3 years ago when the turning point was reached on move 318!

The site is now accessible again BUT the maintenance is still ongoing. Game creation is still blocked at the moment. Replays will trickle down progressively. Still, it's good to be up again! :)

We have opened games again, but we are still monitoring how it goes and may have to close game creation again if needed. Still, that's great! Really happy to see games going live again! :D

How many servers BGA uses at this time ?

I think some Bordgames use server sources more than usual that must be checked

We are still fixing some minor glitches in the background, but you should now be able to play as usual :)

Please note that game replays will stay blocked at the moment as we are still synchronizing the game archives.

Depends how you count. At least 14, without counting the content delivery network or other rented external services.
But as noted in this thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=14633, the number of servers is not really the most important factor, what's important is finding the bottlenecks and turning them into highways :)

Currently games are not the bottleneck, and it's easier with our architecture to scale for games than for the main site so we don't think we'll have an issue there.
