Why am I prompted to place my first cube?

Am I missing something? When the game starts, each player is prompted in turn to place his starting piece. But there's only one place to put it, so why bother prompting? The game should just place everyone's pieces automatically at the required locations.

It matters on some maps that are less symmetrical, where you could choose to start next to a 9 or 8 or 7 depending on what ships you have, and with more than 2 players you may want to choose who to be further away from! On some maps, it is automatic already.
