Collaborative Tournament September 2020

Post by 95chins »

Hey everyone! I'm running a collaborative tournament over on the Board Game Geek forums.
What is a collaborative tournament, you ask? It's a tournament where the contestants are the gods and heroes of Santorini, rather than human players. (Step aside, mortals!)

Here's how it works:
The bracket is made up of gods/heroes, not human players. To participate, play the matchups from the bracket with your friends and report which god/hero won. I'll tally the results for each matchup and whichever god/hero got more wins will progress to the next round.

Tournament News:
— Heracles has more domes and twice as many eyes, but Polyphemus is holding his own. They’re tied at 1-1.
— Harpies vs. Hypnus wins “most despised matchup,” which Hypnus is celebrating by jumping out to a 2-1 lead.
— Circe and Athena are circling each other warily, tied at 2-2. Will Athena climb to victory? Or will she fall victim to Circe’s ensorcellment?
— In other news, I just learned the word “ensorcellment.”
— Finally, Clio and her coins have been mopping the floor with the Castor & Pollux twins, going 3-0 so far. Maybe money is worth more than family?

All that said, the gods are fickle! Round 1 ends next Tuesday — plenty of time for the tables to turn…

Round 1 of the tournament is over, and Round 2 begins today!

Round 1 Recap:
No big surprises to end the round—I guess the gods felt like sparing us from fickleness this time.

— The twelve labors of Heracles is now a baker’s dozen! Heracles defeats Polyphemus 3-1 and moves on to Round 2.
— In shocking defiance of @AlexCotton’s predictions for the tournament, Hypnus ousts Harpies, also by a 3-1 margin.
— No change over the past week for Athena vs. Circe. They ended the round still in a 2-2 tie. With my deepest apologies to Circe, we’ll skip the coin flip and automatically send Athena through to Round 2 in order to avoid Circe vs. Clio, which is a banned matchup.
— Clio holds onto her 3-0 lead against Castor & Pollux and moves on to Round 2 without breaking a sweat.

Round 2:

— It’s a battle of the H’s in Athens, as Heracles and Hypnus face off. Can Hypnus freeze Heracles in place before he’s trapped by domes?
— Meanwhile, in Sparta, Clio matches wits with Athena. Will Clio's winning streak continue, or will she be (the muse of) history?

There’s one week to find out—Round 2 ends next Tuesday, September 22nd. Time to get moving (and building)!

Important rules changes:
— In Round 1, the god/hero on top in the bracket was the first player, but that doesn't necessarily result in the best balance in subsequent rounds, so that rule is out. Heracles and Clio place workers first in their respective matchups.
— Feel free to play and report each matchup multiple times! I've included space to report up to 10 games in each of the polls. I think it'll be fun to get a deeper look at each matchup by playing more than once.
