Colored houses and grey houses

Sorry if it is stated somewhere, but what is the difference between colored houses and grey houses?

Grey houses are in the reserve.
You are allowed to use up to four house in one round.
So will always have 4 colour houses available and the rest will be grey (up to a total of 8 houses)
