Okay ...

I made the following changes :
  • Initial time (which is also maximum time) now changed depending on Speed : 3 mn for fast, 5 mn for normal, 7 mn for slow.
  • Now, the initial time + additional time is displayed right below the Speed option, so you can see that it does change something.
  • Finally, we updated the algorithm that control the evolution of additional time to make it more tolerant. In consequence, the additional time for most of the game is going to decrease (slowly) in the next days/week until we reach a balanced situation.

Thank you all for the great input - on most real-time games I do ok with the clock, but I was consistently struggling (getting penalties, and probably annoying my opponent) with one particular game (Tash Kalar). I've switched my play to turn-based, which I also like, but miss the real-time play. With the feature of 7 min. per turn, I think I'll try another real-time! Again, thanks so much for all your contributions, and thanks to BGA for a really fun site! :D

So, really, there is no difference between modes, at least not in all games. I have no idea why it is great to pretend there is a difference that just isn't there.
It used to work that way, and my turn-based ones are working that way. They are all 1 move/day and have a 5-day start time. There's one game where someone has 3 days left because he took an extra couple, and another has a guy with 9 days left because he was taking less than 24 hours and got extra added on. The rest mostly float around that 5 day mark because we do one turn per day.

I haven't played anything live.

But they were messing with everything so much, it's hard telling what they did.
