When teaching people chess, I teach with a restricted roster and increase pieces as the player gains competency. However, when we finally play a game, we play with all the pieces, all the rules, everything that has been added over its centuries-old history. The only major difference between casual play and tournament play is touch-move.

It’s hard to disagree with Randy who takes a purist position. My guess is that as soon as Gen42’s basic Hive inventory starts running out, we’ll see a shift to the inclusion of all the pieces and the tournament opening. Defaulting to the original rules might even be a contractual obligation between Gen42 and BGA/Asmodee, and in that case, the conversation is moot. But I agree mainly with the poster (sorry Randy). If Hive wants to engage new audiences and grow its base, it really should be presented as one complete set with the tournament opening rule.

Hi everyone, I work for Gen42, and I can tell you we agree with the proposal of making Hive PLM (all three expansions) and the opening tournament rule (no Queen first move) the default options on BGA.
The option to play just the base game can be there, but the opening tournament rule should be the only possible setting, no old rule. In the new product we published last year, Hive Ultimate (https://www.gen42.com/product/hive-ultimate/), the opening tournament rule has become part of the rulesheet, and all official tournaments are played this way, so this is the natural way to go.
How can I reach out to someone in the BGA staff to talk about it?
