So, other games I have played a lot of are Hive, Blooms, Carcassonne, Puerto Rico. In all of those I've used the replay function to study the game.
Hive is obvious, it plays a lot like Chess, so people were already keeping notation for it. In the case of Puerto Rico I was able to dump the logs into a spread-sheet for games between strong players, and then write a simple routine to identify the order of the opening moves and which buildings were constructed to identify patterns amongst winning players. Carcassonne doesn't lend itself to notation or fixed play but it is still possible to analyse a game.
In the walk-through videos I did I had a capture problem with one and I was able to use the replay function to fill in the missing part.
Essentially, you can't seriously talk about strategy and tactics unless you can analyze games. So at the moment I've been taking screen shots every time I encounter a complex situation but initially I thought I would be able to do that and replay the game to fully think through the consequences of the decisions.
